Frequently Asked Questions
Why do some free APIs require API keys?
API keys serve two purposes: rate-limiting and attribution. Even free APIs need to protect their infrastructure from abuse, so requiring a key lets the provider throttle or block individual bad actors without taking down the service for everyone. Keys also give providers usage analytics — how many calls, from which apps — which helps them justify the free tier to investors or plan capacity. If you're just prototyping, a key-required API is only a 30-second inconvenience; the real difference is production deployment, where 'no key' means one fewer secret to rotate and one fewer dependency to break.
Are no-key APIs production-safe?
It depends on the API. Some no-key APIs (Open-Meteo, NOAA Weather, Wikipedia REST) are run by well-funded organisations and are genuinely production-reliable. Others are volunteer-run projects with no SLA. The honest answer: check the uptime data on this page. A no-key API with 99%+ 30-day uptime in our monitoring is safer than a key-required API with 95%. The absence of a key says nothing about reliability — use our composite score to evaluate both dimensions together.
Do no-key APIs have rate limits?
Most do, even if they're not strictly enforced. Open-Meteo's published limit is 10,000 calls/day for non-commercial use. Nominatim enforces 1 request/second and expects a User-Agent header. Wikipedia REST API asks for a meaningful User-Agent but has no published hard cap. Binance's public API allows 1,200 requests/minute. The practical rule: set a User-Agent that identifies your app, stay well inside any published limits, and implement retry-with-backoff. Going over limits on a no-key API just results in 429 responses — no billing surprise.
Can I use no-key APIs for commercial projects?
Commercially — usually yes, with attribution requirements. Open-Meteo is explicitly non-commercial; for a paid product you'd need their commercial plan. Wikipedia content is CC-licensed and requires attribution but permits commercial use. Hacker News API, Reddit JSON, and DEV Community API have no commercial restrictions. Nominatim requires attribution to OpenStreetMap contributors. Always read the provider's terms of service before shipping to production; the 'no key' convenience doesn't automatically mean 'no restrictions'.
